Current Priorities
Issue
Durham City Centre PACT Priorities:
-Antisocial Behaviour and nuisance begging
-Youth nuisance and anti-social behaviour on North Road
Action
•Under Operation Trailblazer, we carried out an extra 2000 hours of patrols in ASB hot spot areas in the city between February and October 2024. Over the same period we made 75 arrests, carried out 73 stop searches and made 171 alcohol seizures. This activity is continuing into summer with 'Op PAVE' and specific hotspot patrol activity around the city and particularly the transport hubs.
•We successfully applied for 16 Criminal Behaviour Orders, which have banned persistent offenders from the city centre.
• In September 2024, a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) was introduced in the city to tackle behaviours including begging, urinating in the street and the use of intoxicating substances. A consultation had earlier found 83 per cent of people supported the proposal. This is regularly enforced by us and our partners in Durham County Council.
•Safer Streets funding paid for 34 enhanced high definition CCTV cameras covering the city centre installed in October 2024.
•Shoplifting is down by 15.4% for the year ending March 2025, compared to the years ending March 2024 (that is 53 fewer offences)
•Reported ASB fell by 50% in the North Road/bus station/riverbanks hotspot in Oct – Dec 2024 compared to the same period last year
