Current Priorities
Issue
We understand local people are concerned about speeding, street racing, and anti-social behaviour, particularly on Cherry Orchard Way.
Action
We are working with Rochford Council to put a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in place.
A PSPO is a legal order that sets rules for behaviour in public spaces. It helps us deal with problems like street drinking, drug use, or other behaviour that makes people feel unsafe. Anyone who breaks the rules can be fined or face further action.
While we work with the council on this, we’ve already increased patrols and are using targeted enforcement. This means we focus our time and resources on the places and people causing the most harm. We use information from the community, CCTV, and local intelligence to guide where we go and what action we take.
This approach has already helped reduce anti-social behaviour and improve public confidence. We also keep people updated through our social media channels.
We’re committed to working with local partners and the community to keep this area safe and welcoming for everyone.
Issue
Residents and local business owners and staff have told us they have concerns about shoplifting, street drinking and people asking for money in public places, particularly on Rayleigh High Street.
Action
We are using a new CCTV system to help identify those involved and collect evidence. This helps us take action, such as giving Community Protection Warnings (CPWs).
A CPW is a written warning given to someone whose behaviour is having a negative effect on the community. It tells them to stop the behaviour. If they don’t, they may be given a Community Protection Notice (CPN).
A CPN is a legal notice that requires the person to stop the behaviour and take steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Ignoring a CPN is a criminal offence and can lead to a fine.
We’re also working with local shops to ban repeat shoplifters.
You’ll see more police officers on market days, as these are often the busiest and most affected by crime. Officers are also speaking with market traders to give advice and help them spot suspicious behaviour.
Issue
Local people have told us they’re worried about drug dealing and suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods, especially around the lakes.
Action
We have specialist teams dedicated to investigating and dismantling those involved in drug supply within our neighbourhoods.
Using intelligence-led policing, we carry out proactive patrols to gather information, deter violent offenders, and prevent serious crime. This approach helps us target those who pose the greatest risk to our communities.
But tackling drug-related crime isn’t just about enforcement. We work closely with local organisations to protect vulnerable people, including those exploited by County Line gangs.
We partner with the Essex Violence and Vulnerability Unit (VVU)—a group of public services and local organisations with a shared goal: to protect young and vulnerable people and prevent their involvement in violent crime.
Our safeguarding officers play a key role in identifying individuals who are being exploited or controlled by criminal networks, ensuring they get the support they need.
