Current Priorities
Issue
People who live, work and study in Harlow said they are worried about violent crime.
Action
We’re using hotspot policing to focus police resources on key locations and times where violent crime is more likely to happen. By maintaining a visible police presence, we aim to deter violence and keep communities safe.
With local information, we’re also taking proactive steps to identify and disrupt gangs and individuals involved in violent crime.
To strengthen our efforts, we are using Live Facial Recognition technology to help identify known offenders in real time as well as Open gate technology, which uses walk-through scanners in public spaces to detect concealed weapons or prohibited items without stopping or searching individuals.
These tools are deployed in busy areas to deter criminal activity and support early intervention.
In partnership with the Safer Harlow Partnership, we’re also delivering crime prevention and education programmes in schools - helping young people stay safe and avoid involvement in violence.
Issue
Drug dealing is a concern for the Harlow community.
Action
We’re working closely with the community to take action against county lines drug networks and gang activity in Harlow. Local officers are focusing on the places where the community tell us this is happening.
We’re doing this by:
Using stop and search when there’s good reason to suspect someone is involved in crime.
Going into properties with permission from the courts to find evidence and make arrests.
Targeting those who repeatedly cause harm in our communities
We’re not just focusing on arrests - we’re also looking at long-term solutions. When it’s appropriate, we’ll:
Use approaches like restorative justice, where people who commit crime learn about the impact of their actions.
Offer other options instead of going to court, such as community work or support programmes.
Help people affected by drug use to get the support they need and avoid getting drawn back into crime.
We’re also working with the Safer Harlow Partnership to deliver lessons and workshops in schools. These help young people understand the risks of getting involved in drugs or gangs and support them to make safer choices.
Issue
Residents have told us they’re worried about anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhoods.
Action
We know anti-social behaviour (ASB) is a concern for many residents. That’s why our Neighbourhood Policing Team is working closely with the Safer Harlow Partnership and local communities to find long-term solutions.
We’re focusing on:
Being visible and active in the right places at the right times to help prevent ASB
Listening to residents and acting on local concerns
Using powers under the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in the town centre. A PSPO allows us to place restrictions on certain behaviours—such as street drinking or groups causing a nuisance—in specific public areas to help keep them safe and welcoming
Using other powers under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act to deal with persistent offenders
Our officers will also continue to patrol footpaths and cycle routes. We’re taking action against people who use these paths illegally—for example, riding off-road bikes, e-scooters, or other motorised vehicles where they’re not allowed. These vehicles can pose a danger to pedestrians and cyclists, and when used irresponsibly, they can cause damage or fear in the community. Where necessary, we will seize vehicles being used unlawfully.
Together, we’re working to make Harlow a safer and more enjoyable place for everyone.
