Current Priorities

Issue

The beat team to deal with issues of road safety and speeding in Charnwood West villages. If you believe that there is an issue in your area, let the beat team know.

Action

January - Officers have conducted a variety of speed compliance checks, mainly featuring using the mobile speed gun in areas where residents have highlighted vehicles regularly exceeding the speed limit. Checks were conducted in the areas of Forest Road, Woodhouse and Swithland Lane, Rothley to monitor the average speeds of vehicles at peak travel times. Only one vehicle was found to exceed the speed limit, that a traffic offence report was completed. The results of the speed checks have been shared with the Road safety team to seek support from the local council to consider the installation of traffic calming measures on these roads. In addition to this, marked police vehicle have also been patrolling these areas to discourage speeding.

February - The Charnwood West DNO team are continue to conduct Speeding Operations in areas you have highlighted to have a significant speeding problem. You will continue to see us using the mobile speed gun to conduct these checks and seek to issue Traffic Offence Reports where applicable.
We have also been engaging with the Road Safety Partnership covering Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and highlighted areas where vehicles are travelling at excess speed so the Speed Camera Van can be deployed. If you feel there is a speeding issue in your area, please get in touch.

March - March’s speed operations were carried out in the areas of Main Street Swithland 15:15pm-16:00pm on 01/03/24, 149 vehicles monitored 140 vehicles travelling 30mph and below, 1 vehicle travelling at 36mph warning issued by PC 1574. On 18th March between 07:45am-09:30am on Forest Road Woodhouse 50 vehicles monitored with the highest speed on that day recorded as 34mph advice letter issued and Main Street Swithland was also re-visited. 30 vehicles monitored however only one vehicle travelling at 31mph so an overall improvement and deterrent

April 2025
Speed checks have been carried out at Swithland Lane Rothley and Wood lane In Quorn. One TOR was issued for excess speed on Swithland Lane with the rest being compliant with the speed limit. We have also secured the speed camera van on Forest Rd Woodhouse for a few hours.

May 2025
Speed operation was completed on Brand Hill Woodhouse eaves. Over 45 minutes, no vehicles were observed in contravention of the speed limit. Another is also planned for 30th May in Rothley. All information is fed into the road safety partnership who collate thsi information to see if it warrants further traffic calming or enforcement measures.

JUNE 25
The Charnwood West Dedicated Neighbourhood Officers (DNO) team continues to take action against speeding in areas identified as high-risk by our community and data analysis. Our mobile speed gun operations remain active, and we are committed to issuing Traffic Offence Reports and warnings where appropriate. During the month of June two locations were covered:
•Swithland Lane, Rothley: 85 vehicles checked, 8 exceeded 35mph.
•Main Street, Swithland: 75 vehicles checked, 4 exceeded 35mph.
These figures reflect our ongoing efforts to improve road safety and reduce speeding in residential and rural areas. We’re also working with the Road Safety Partnership to deploy Speed Camera Vans in high-risk areas across Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland.

Our mobile speed enforcement operations are ongoing, with officers actively issuing Traffic Offence Reports and warnings where necessary. Here’s a snapshot of our recent activity:

•24th July – Charnwood West: Rush hour patrols were conducted across known speeding hotspots to deter dangerous driving and reinforce safe road use.
We appreciate the community’s continued support in making our roads safer for everyone.
