Current Priorities

Issue

Robbery
Our data shows that there has been an increase in robbery incidents on Mitcham Road junction with Tooting High Street around the ATM's. A distraction technique is being used whereby one suspect approaches someone using the ATM, whilst the second suspect steals the money being dispensed with the machine.

Action

Op Kenny has been created and will be focused on the Tooting area. They are a team of officers who are dedicated to preventing and tackling violent crime in the area which does include Robbery and knife enabled crime. Op Kenny officers work closely with the Tooting Broadway Safer Neighbourhood Team, which involves using gathered intelligence so we can focus our proactive patrols in hot spot areas. Patrols are conducted in plain clothes, to better identify any suspects committing these offences and hi-visibility to deter any criminality in the area. The team have recently been involved in Community Engagement at Barclays bank the engage with their customers.

Issue

Tooting Broadway has a high footfall due to the tube station, Tooting Market and St George's Hospital. Due to this we are aware there is a problem with begging, rough sleeping, shoplifting, rowdy behaviour from licenced premises and drug dealing, this is across the ward and not specific to any certain area. These concerns are regularly raised to use in our ward panel meetings.

Action

As part of the Summer 2025 crime plan, we are dedicated to reducing ASB in the area. Our team have been involved in Op Zoridon, which involved executing 11 warrants in the area to target venues who are suspected of buying stolen goods from shoplifters. This has helped us tackle retain crime by removing easy opportunities for shoplifters to make quick and easy sales. Money from these sales helps individuals fund drug addictions, so as a consequence of these warrant it was used to reduce the drug use in the ward. When tackling begging and rough sleepers we have been working closely with our partners in the council to engage with vulnerable individuals who can be referred to other services to support them in receiving housing opportunities. If you have any information that can help us tackle drug dealing or retail crime in the area then please remember to report your information to crime stoppers.

Issue

Vehicle crime is being committed in specific areas where a large number of vehicles are parked, this includes St George's Hospital car park and Sainsbury's car park, common offences being committed are theft from vehicles and theft of vehicles. Due to the high number of take away restaurants in the area, we have seen an increase in moped delivery drivers being targeted.

Action

During our shift we regularly conduct hi-visibility patrols in the larger car parks on our ward. We have a good relationship with St George's Hospital and Sainsburys where we have meetings with managers so that we are kept up to date with any issues that they have been made aware of. Positive outcomes from these meetings include Sainsbury's deploying a CCTV van to the far end of their car park to deter anyone looking to commit crime. There have also been discussions with the council around lighting and CCTV in the alleyways that lead to the car park from Mitcham Road and Bickley Street to make the area safer for customers. We will continue to monitor the situation through our reports and remind the public to follow crime prevention advice around keeping your vehicle secure.
