Current Priorities
Issue
Retail Theft & Commercial Burglary - Continuous positive action against the most prolific retail crime offenders by the Retail Crime Officer. The Retail Crime Officer works closely along side persistently targeted businesses to support, increase reporting and prevent re-offending by serial offenders.
Action
We continue to deal proactively with all retail theft due to the impact it has on businesses, staff members, and the local community.
On 28/07/2025 a well known prolific shoplifter was arrested by Neighbourhood officers for 4 shop thefts. All the evidence was gathered and the suspect was subsequently charged and remanded to court. At court she was given a 16 weeks prison sentence suspected for 12 months. The suspect was also given a drug rehabilitation requirement.
We are committed to dealing with retail crime robustly and ensure that repeat offenders are prosecuted wherever possible.
Issue
Night-time Economy and Violence of any kind including Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) - Hi-vis patrols around York City centre in relation to the NTE and the prevention of VAWG, including raising awareness and reporting around spiking through Op Lester.
Action
As it continues to be busy in the city centre due to the warm weather and school holidays, our local Neighbourhood Policing Team have been patrolling the city centre to provide reassurance to the public and to prevent any incidents from taking place.
On 16/08/2025 a male was arrested in the city centre for being drunk and disorderly. His level of intoxication meant that he was a risk to himself and other members of the public. He was subsequently charged for the offence and will be required to attend court next month.
Issue
Cycle Theft and the roll out of Bike Register in 2025 - Launch of Op Battery, our longer-term Problem Solving Plan to deal with Cycle crime and roll out of Bike Register Cycle marking through organised events in 2025.
Action
On 21st July the York Inner Neighbourhood Policing team held 2 community engagement events at Door 84 and at Foss Island Retail Park. A number of bikes were marked using the Bike Register scheme. Having your bike marked significantly reduces the risk of the bike being stolen so is a important preventative measure. Keep an eye out for one of our upcoming bike marking events!
Issue
Anti-Social Behaviour - Target patrol of Hotspot areas, use of Dispersal, Stop/Search, powers of arrest where grounds permit. Dealing with repeat Youth offending through staged ASB process and both Youths and/or Adults for any criminal offences committed from the behaviour.
Action
Last weekend (23-24 August) saw an influx of Racegoers into the City Centre due to the EBOR race festival. Historically, this is a very busy time for the local Neighbourhood team, and this year was no exception.
A Dispersal authority was put in place to combat ASB and extra resources were deployed into the City on both Saturday and Sunday. Working collaboratively with the York BID, BTP, York Rescue boat and other agencies, your local Police helped to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for people to enjoy the occasion.
A number of dispersals were issued throughout the weekend which helped to quash ASB issues before they developed further. Your local Neighbourhood team continue to strive to keep people safe and feeling safe
