Issue

Scams and frauds, protecting vulnerable and elderly members of your community.

Every year, the British public loses billions of pounds to fraudsters.

It’s very important to keep up to date with the ways fraudsters try to take our money; you may already know some of the tricks they use, but the rise of the internet means new ones are being invented all the time, and huge amounts of money can be taken. Whether it’s dating fraud, banking fraud, identity theft or even people knocking on your door, find out how modern fraud works, what you can do to guard against it and how to report it.

Our Sussex Police website has a library of support and information, as well as useful tips and signs to spot in potential scams and fraud, as well as support for those who may have been a victim.

Action

In the last few months, officers in Seaford have reported receiving a number of reports of scams across your town, with many being reports of rogue traders offering services ranging from gardening, roofing, to doorstop selling or investment opportunities.

Officers continue to work closely with partners, including trading standards, and Action Fraud to not only raise awareness of these types of scams, and the signs to look out for, but also in offering victims support in helping to report incidents to their bank, and conduct visits to victims who are maybe vulnerable or elderly as part of Operation Signature; this includes not only visiting victims but also conducting enquiries such as house to house investigations to obtain CCTV footage of potential suspects to help identify those committing offences of fraud across Seaford.

Seaford officers have visited a number of local groups in the last few months to deliver scam and fraud awareness sessions, these include talks held at a number of care homes, or retirement homes to help educate communities on the latest types of frauds doing the rounds, and help on reporting scams.

Scam talks will be advertised in our ‘events’ tab above which are open to all members of the community to attend.

Operation Downsway

Our yearly campaign to address community concerns around road and driving related offences that fall into the fatal 5 driving offences.

Including targeted patrols, education and enforcement activities across the district throughout the Summer months, focused on targeting excess speed, distracted driving, as well as drink/drug driving.

Continued work with partners, local authorities, including volunteer Community Speed Watch Groups in Seaford to support activities and keep the roads of your town safe for all road users.

Action

Over the summer months a number of patrols, enforcement days and police/partner deployments have been conducted across Seaford to tackle ASB driving.

This includes a number of hours spent by local officers supporting local Community SpeedWatch Groups (CSW) in the area, working alongside volunteers to record and report on offences of excess speeding. Those recorded by police will be referred to our Sussex Roads Safety Team who will look into either educational or enforcement notifications, or in-person police officer visits as a result.

During the summer months police have also conducted a number of police led activities to tackle driving related offences across your town, as a result of these a number of vehicles have been seized during our patrols and deployments across the town, this includes EScooters, and a number of vehicles all being driving without insurance, as part of our continue commitment to tackling your community concerns in relation to ASB driving, dangerous driving, and our response under Operation Downsway.

Operation Downsway will continue in the Autumn months, with officers continuing to support local CSW groups, and deploy road side stops, both enforcing and educating driver, with support from our Sussex Police Road Safety Team; there are also a number of campaigns which will run through into the Winter months, including our crackdown on drink and drug driving over the festive period.
