Current Priorities
Issue
Begging
Action
We are still working in this area to reduce and prevent the occurrences of begging. When resourcing allows we will be present at key locations to offer help and support to people located - ensure they are aware of what is available for them and if this is a persistent issue they will be dealt with through the use of community protection warning notices.
In response to growing community concerns, the Edgbaston NHT is making the issue of begging and associated behaviours a priority. Our approach will focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, business owners, and those experiencing hardship, while upholding respect and dignity for all individuals in our community.
We are particularly focused on addressing begging along key areas, including the Hagley Road corridor, as well as the Bristol Road junction with Belgrave Middleway, where concerns have been raised about public safety and disruption to traffic flow.
While we recognize that many who engage in begging may be in vulnerable situations, our primary responsibility is to maintain public order and safety. We are committed to a balanced approach that addresses both the concerns of local residents and businesses, as well as the underlying social factors contributing to begging.
Begging:
To this end, the Edgbaston NHT will increase its presence in these areas, engaging in outreach efforts alongside outreach workers to provide assistance to individuals in need.
Our team will target aggressive begging or behaviour that disrupts public order. In these cases, we will take appropriate action, which may include warnings, or arrests, as necessary.
We encourage the public to report any safety concerns related to begging by contacting West Midlands Police on 101.
The safety and quality of life for all members of our community remain our highest priority, and we will continue to evaluate and adjust our approach to ensure that it is both effective and compassionate.
Issue
Burglary
Action
In the last month we have seen 16 burglary offences. This is a reduction on the same period last year where there were 28 offences. We have been in the key locations completing target hardening work and advising residents around crime prevention. This work is ongoing. Yesterday a key nominal was arrested who we believe had been committing a number of offences, not just burglary. They have been recalled to prison and the work around the offences they are believed to have completed is ongoing.
The Edgbaston Neighbourhood Policing Team (NHT) is placing burglary as one of its key priorities in response to concerns raised by local residents and businesses. We understand the significant emotional and financial impact that burglary can have on victims, and we are committed to ensuring the safety and security of homes and businesses in the Edgbaston area.
Our team is actively working to prevent burglaries through increased patrols, targeted operations. We are utilising intelligence-led policing to identify hotspots and patterns of criminal activity, ensuring our resources are focused where they are most needed.
As part of our efforts, we encourage residents to take steps to secure their properties, such as using quality locks, ensuring doors and windows are secure, and considering home security systems. Our officers are available to provide advice and support on crime prevention measures that can help reduce the risk of burglary.
We also ask the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police, as timely information is crucial in preventing and solving crimes. By working together, we can create a safer environment for everyone.
Edgbaston NHT is dedicated to protecting the community, and we will continue to make burglary prevention and investigation a priority. If you have any concerns or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Issue
Vehicle Crime
Action
In the last month we have seen 29 vehicle offences - this is a reduction from the 35 at the same time last year. We have been patrolling the area and interacting with key nominals seen. An arrest has taken place in the last month for a male committing vehicle offences and they are now remanded in prison pending a court trial. Further joint work has taken place in the locality alongside the exempt accommodation team to ensure that the correct support is being offered within properties. This is targeted towards those where key nominals are residing in efforts to reduce drug use which is one of the key issues behind vehicle crime.
The Edgbaston Neighbourhood Policing Team (NHT) is making vehicle crime, including the theft of motor vehicles and theft from motor vehicles, a top priority in response to concerns raised by local residents. We understand that these types of crimes can cause considerable disruption and distress to victims, and we are committed to addressing this issue to ensure the safety and security of the community.
To tackle vehicle crime effectively, our team is increasing patrols in areas where these incidents have been most prevalent, employing intelligence-led policing to identify patterns of offending. We are also working closely with other departments within West Midlands Police and community partners to gather intelligence and target offenders involved in vehicle-related crime.
We strongly encourage residents to take steps to protect their vehicles, such as ensuring cars are securely locked, removing valuables from sight, and parking in well-lit or secure areas where possible. Our officers are available to offer crime prevention advice and assist with security measures to help reduce the risk of vehicle-related crime.
We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or concerns. Quick reporting can often prevent crimes or assist in the swift recovery of stolen vehicles.
The Edgbaston NHT is committed to working with the community to reduce vehicle crime and improve safety for all residents. We will continue to make vehicle crime prevention and investigation a priority. If you have any information or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
