Current Priorities

Issue

Dewsbury West Ward Areas

  • Street Drinking and Anti-Social Behaviour – Huddersfield Road, Ravensthorpe
There has been a recent increase in reports of street drinking and associated anti-social behaviour along Huddersfield Road in Ravensthorpe. This behaviour has had a negative impact on the local community, contributing to feelings of unease and reducing the overall quality of life for residents and businesses in the area. In response, local police have stepped up patrols and are actively engaging with individuals involved in such behaviour. Community Protection Warnings (CPWs) are being issued to those found drinking in public or engaging in disorderly conduct. Where necessary, further enforcement action will be taken, including arrests and referrals to support services for those with underlying issues such as substance misuse.

  • Anti-Social Behaviour and Drug Activity – Bradbury Street, Ravensthorpe
Following a series of incidents involving anti-social behaviour and suspected drug use in the Bradbury Street area of Ravensthorpe, ward officers have increased patrol activity. This includes both high-visibility presence and plain-clothes operations aimed at disrupting illegal activity and reassuring the community. Efforts to tackle drug use and supply in the area are ongoing and we encourage anyone with information to report it directly to the police or anonymously via Crimestoppers. All intelligence received is taken seriously and is actively developed, with the aim of securing search warrants and taking appropriate enforcement action. Ward Officers remain committed to addressing these issues and continue to work proactively to reduce drug-related harm in the community.

Repeat offenders will face escalating consequences, with further disposals considered where necessary.

Issue

Dewsbury South Ward Areas

  1. Drug use and drug dealing in the car park of The Scarborough public house
Reports have been made to local Councillors regarding young people suspected of using drugs at the rear of The Scarborough public house car park during school hours. These reports suggest that the location may be used by local school children as a place to truant and use cannabis. Dewsbury Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) will monitor and patrol the area, with officers tasked to take appropriate enforcement action where necessary. NPT will also liaise with the local school to identify any concerns regarding student attendance during school hours and to support a coordinated response.

  2. Speeding vehicles Whitley Road, Thornhill
Concerns have been raised about high-performance vehicles driving at excessive speeds and in an erratic manner along Whitley Road. This section of road is subject to a 30MPH speed limit, but drivers are frequently perceived to be exceeding this limit. In response, Dewsbury and Mirfield Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) carried out several speed enforcement operations throughout April and May. These resulted in multiple speeding tickets and other tickets for traffic-related offences being issued. The NPT will continue to conduct targeted enforcement days to deter dangerous driving and improve road safety in the area.

Issue

Mirfield Ward Areas

  • Traffic and Road Safety
Several traffic-related concerns have been raised by residents across the Mirfield area. These include persistent speeding and failure to stop at junctions, particularly in residential zones. Inconsiderate and illegal parking near local schools, creating hazards for children and parents. Breaches of the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) that restricts Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) from entering Upper Hopton. The unsafe use of electric scooters on pavements, posing risks to pedestrians.

Neighbourhood policing teams have responded by conducting regular patrols in known problem areas. Officers are monitoring traffic behaviour, issuing warnings and fines where appropriate, and working with local authorities to explore long-term solutions such as improved signage or traffic calming measures. The Off-Road Bike Team has also been deployed to tackle illegal and dangerous riding, resulting in several bike seizures and prosecutions.

  • Anti-social Behaviour
Reports of anti-social behaviour have been received from residents in and around New Tanhouse Street, Wilson Terrace/Avenue and Bankfield Court. Concerns include groups of youths gathering in public spaces, engaging in disruptive behaviour, and suspected cannabis use. These activities have caused distress to local residents and contributed to a sense of insecurity in the community. In response, local officers have increased patrols in the affected areas.  Engagement with young people is ongoing, with officers offering advice and support while also taking enforcement action where necessary. Intelligence gathering is also underway to identify any links to drug supply or organised activity.

  • Nuisance Motorbikes – Sands Lane, Mirfield
We have received multiple reports of nuisance motorbikes being used in and around the Sands Lane area, including incidents of damage caused to the nearby golf course. These activities are not only disruptive but also pose safety risks to the public and local environment. The Anti-Social Behaviour Bike Team is aware of these concerns and is working closely with Mirfield Neighbourhood Policing Team officers to patrol the area. Officers are actively seizing bikes being used unlawfully or in an anti-social manner. As the warm weather continues, patrols will remain in place throughout the summer to deter offending and take enforcement action where necessary. We encourage residents to report any concerns regarding anti-social vehicle use via the police web chat or by calling 101.

Action

  • Traffic and Road Safety
In response, neighbourhood policing teams have increased patrols in identified hotspots. Officers are actively monitoring driver behaviour, issuing warnings and fixed penalty notices where appropriate. They are also working closely with local authorities to explore long-term solutions such as improved signage and traffic calming measures.
The Off-Road Bike Team has been deployed to address illegal and dangerous riding, resulting in multiple bike seizures and prosecutions. Since last month, targeted patrols have been carried out by uniformed officers from Patrol, NPT, and Roads Policing teams. Notably, on 30th June, an evening of action led to 11 traffic tickets being issued and a Section 59 warning served. Efforts will continue throughout the summer to improve road safety and address community concerns. Ward officer PC 6986 Clarke has conducted a number of focused traffic days of action in the areas of concern, resulting in vehicle tickets being issued and vehicles being seized.
